PM Evening: tips for gurus and newbies

Recently we’ve held a PM Evening for newbies and experts in the project management sphere. This is a solid filter to screen everything that can be heard, seen and felt that happens unconscionably. And to be able to understand the worldview of the separate person it can be interpreted as a certain color. Every stage translates its unique way of perception of the world. The paradigms of thinking can’t be good or bad -  they just show people’s values. Based on them, people perform their deeds. Where can the Spiral Dynamics Model be used?

2. «Dances around the table»

  Max Streltsov, Project Manager at Dev-Pro   Proxemics is the branch of knowledge that deals with the amount of space that people feel it necessary to set between themselves and others.   From Max’s report, we learned, how to sit around the table to make talker and yourself feel comfortable when having conversations like:

• interview (job applicant, recruiter, technical specialist)
• meeting with a client (client and sales manager)
• one-on-one (employee and hr)
• vital dialogue (pm and employee)

  The first one is the corner position. It fits good for:

• dealmaking
• interviews
• one-on-one talks

The second one is the competing defensive position. It is recommended for:

• Negotiations
• situations when you have to press the employee

The third position is a business cooperation. It is used:  

• when discussing a project in a group
• during the second round of negotiations

The fourth one - is an independent position. It is used when:

• working alone
• eating
• reading

The fifth position is equal share:

• depends on the context
• quantity matters more than quality
• conditional equality

4. Technical background

There is no second chance to make a first impression, that is why you should be well briefed. Step 2. Acquaintance When acquainting you should:

1. Introduce;
2. Thank for the project;
3. Tell about yourself (job, the experience of project management);
4. Send your contact details and ask the client what time to communicate fit him/her best;
5. Offer the date for the next call;
6. Kindly say good-bye.

Step 3. Get to know each other better Talking about the work topics:

1. Explore the weaknesses
2. Analyze competitors to show personal interest;
3. Discuss the brief;
4. Tell about company standards (reporting, following-up).

Step 4. Formalization of relationships
